Timeline

November 4, 2011 (Week 4): Positive home pregnancy test!

November 21, 2011 (Week 7): First glimpse of the Littlest Warrior as an embryo.

January 5, 2012 (Week 13): NT scan reveals that the Littlest Warrior has gastroschisis.

February 23, 2012 (Week 20): 20-week anatomy scan reveals that all other organs and structures look normal, heartbeat is strong, growth is on track, and the Littlest Warrior is a girl. :)

May 10, 2012 (Week 31): At a routine ultrasound my AFI (amniotic fluid index) is measured at 5.5, and I am immediately admitted to the hospital for continuous (24/7) fetal monitoring.

May 16, 2012 (Week 32): After nearly a week of continuous monitoring, the Littlest Warrior shows no signs of being bothered by the low fluid.  In fact, she's doing so well that my doctors reduce my monitoring to one hour every four hours.  While not on the monitor I can get out of bed, walk around, and go outside.  However, my AFI is still too low to allow me to go home. It's starting to look like I'll be here until the Littlest Warrior is born...

June 21, 2012 (Week 37): Lucille Amelia Mekkelson is born at 2:49 pm, weighing 5 lbs/4 oz and measuring 17+ inches.  Welcome to the world, Lucy!

June 25, 2012 (4 days old): After spending 46 days in the hospital, I finally return home.  Lucy remains in the NICU.

June 28, 2012 (1 week old): After 1 week Lucy's intestine is fully reduced into her body.  Her silo is removed and a dressing is placed over the hole to allow it to close without surgery.

July 4, 2012 (2 weeks old): Lucy starts feedings with 2 mls of breast milk every 8 hours.

July 16, 2012 (3.5 weeks old): After 26 days in the NICU, our little Lucille comes home!!!

January 6, 2014: Baby #2 on the way!! Due October 14, 2014.

April 2, 2014: 12-week ultrasound reveals Baby #2 is healthy and belly is nice and closed!

October 16, 2014: Lucy's healthy baby brother, Max Rowland Mekkelson, is born (sharing a birthday with his dad!) Max is born via VBAC and weighs in at a healthy 8 lbs, 6 oz.

  1. Dear Erik and Heidi,
I'm very nervous because it looks like I will be the first one to "post a comment" on your new and fabulous blog! You have done a wonderful job, Heidi! I learned some things I didn't know and remembered some things I forgot!

By-the-way, hello to Miss X! You'll be reading this some day! Today, however, I'm really looking forward to meeting you for the first time!!!

I'm not so nervous that I want to sign off without an affirmation about you two "for-the-record!" You are a lesson for life. You celebrate when there are reasons to celebrate, which is alot! You cry when there are reasons to cry. After the time for celebrating or crying is over, you hold hands and kiss, and then think and plan together about creating a tomorrow that will be meaningful... for you and others. You are an amazing team that so faithfully honors the concept of marriage, and now parenthood. I am so very proud of you both! My little granddaughter won't need to fight as hard as you may think... because you are her parents! With much love, G-Ma Mek
